The new invisible solar panels installed in Pompeii

Updated: Jun 17, 2023

A solution has been found at the famous excavation site to reduce the cost of electricity without spoiling the historic beauty of the ruins.

Three and a half million tourists each year explore the ruins of the ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. But because of Pompeii's size, energy bills are expensive and conventional methods of supplying power throughout the site can threaten its appearance. This is how the project of innovative solar panels that do not disfigure the landscape was embraced. To date, this solution has been installed in Pompeii on the House of Ceres, on a thermopolium (a place of refreshment in ancient Rome), and on the House of the Vettii, recently reopened after 20 years of restoration work. Dyaqua, an Italian family business, designed and patented the technology used. The idea was to create a product that could be made to look like stone, wood, cement, or brick so that it would blend in anywhere.

These amazing new solar panels look exactly like the terracotta tiles used by the Ancient Romans but produce the electricity we need to illuminate the frescoes. The ancient site installs solar panels that look invisible: they have been made like typical Roman terracotta tiles to embrace sustainability without forgetting traditional materials. "We are an archaeological site, but we also want to be a real laboratory for sustainability and valorisation of intangible heritage. Our initiative is not only symbolic. Through the million tourists who visit us every year, we want to send out a message: cultural heritage can be managed differently and more sustainably,' says Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park.

The MAXXI in Rome will soon adopt this energy mode as well as the city of Evora in Portugal. This is a hilly location built entirely with typical red terracotta roofs. For such a place, classic photovoltaics would have ruined the landscape, but this will not happen if a solution like the one adopted in Pompeii is used. The municipality has already approved and is enthusiastic about the project.

Photovoltaics is gaining more recognition also in worldwide known historical spots. At GreenView Energy we strongly encourage the development of new solar energy projects worldwide to EMPOWER THE FUTURE.
