The European Commission and Enel, an Italian company, have partnered to donate 5,700 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels to Ukraine in a joint project called "Ray of Hope". The PV panels have a capacity of about 2 MW and are produced in Catania, Europe. With the support of the European Innovation Fund the planned solar panel donation will cover up to 11,400 square metres of roofs across various public buildings such as school, hospitals and fire departments in Ukraine. The delivery, organized by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, is scheduled for summer 2023.

This initiative is part of the EU's broader efforts to provide off-grid solutions that will supply electricity to critical public buildings in Ukraine. As a result of continued Russian attacks on Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure, the EU is also providing 5,400 energy generators. The solar PV panels as well as the generators will enable public buildings in Ukraine to depend on self-generated electricity. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen believes that “other European companies as well as Member States will be inspired by this first step, so that Ukraine can rely on clean electricity, produced at home”.

“It is especially important today to expand the capacity for autonomous power supply of facilities that are vital for the country’s functioning,” said Ukrainian Minister of Energy, German Galushchenko.

This is a prime example of solidarity among the European Union and highlights the importance of independent energy sources.
