Businesses are at the Core of Reaching Sustainability Goals

Updated: May 18, 2023

The current trajectory of where we are headed means detrimental effects for the planet and for life. The Paris Agreement established a 2°C as the limit to global warming, with 1.5°C being the preferred limit. This was agreed upon to determine the steps needed to start combatting global warming together effectively. However, 1.1°C has already been reached, we are in a critical decade. Change is needed in order to get back on track to reaching the agreements made in Paris in 2015. Both businesses and individuals must do their part in order to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

"If you cannot set a credible course for net zero. with 2025 and 2030 targets covering all your operations, you should not be in business." - António Guterres, Secretary-General, UN General Assembly February 2023

CCOP27, the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, took place in 2022 in Egypt. The goal of CCOP meetings is to share innovative ideas and solutions that will aid in achieving the implementation of the Paris Agreement. Many needs were established at the conference including the need for transparency and accountability in the private sector and the need for stronger and clearer standards to net zero emission pledges by businesses with strict implementation programs. Important goals were also set for COP28 in 2023 including the Secretary-General urging non-state actors to present credible and transparent future plans to transition for 2030. A new emissions-reduction global plan for 2030 was also established, as well as a Fund for Loss and Damage, which will assist developing countries cope with the consequences of climate change.

A key takeaway from COP27 is that multilateralism, which means involving non-state actors, including businesses, NGOs, academics, young people, and civil society to play an active role in the journey to carbon neutrality, is crucial to finding an inclusive and effective way forward. Inclusive, multilateral collaboration can permit us to achieve the necessary changes to support a sustainable future. The upcoming COP28 will be held in November and December of 2023 in Dubai and must show that big changes have been made toward correcting climate change. The agenda for taking action against climate change will be adapted and businesses will have the opportunity to showcase how they are doing their part to transition to a green business model.

It is not too late to make the changes we need to see to properly combat climate change and reach the goals that we have set globally, but we need to make drastic changes now to do so. Businesses play a crucial part in reaching these goals, so corporate climate accountability is needed going forward. Businesses must implement sustainability into the core of their business plans and act accordingly.
